Nowadays six, out of every ten teenage girl, is “13 going on 30” fashion wise. Observing style moments at events held in Nigeria, fashion week street style around the world and walking the streets of Lagos recently, I came to the dismay conclusion, that teenage style was rapidly becoming extinct. Most teens sacrifice their style on the altar of global fashion trend, which often times is more fit for the trendy twenties to the cougars forties fashionista.

The teenage style lovers, sticking to ageless fashion staples, only fares marginally better, as ageless trends tendto trap the wearer in a neutral style state at best.

For the trendy teenager, adding age appropriateness to global fashion trends, you loveis a necessity. Your wardrobe must have a perfect combination of the hip, trendy, chic, and simple. Stay away from the more mature fads of waist high slits, micro skirts, navel plunging dress, nude cut out and other more provocative and hence mature fads. 

The trendy teenage fashionista style mantra should be simple, chic and fun. Stick to bright, cheery, pop colors for fun outings, visits or the basic black and white shade for a stark and edgy fashion statement.  Invest in skinnies, jeans, tees, simply chic gowns, boyfriend jackets, shorts, midriff crops, simple jewelries, nude makeup with a hint of pop for special events.

The teenage style lover’s makeup and footwear is also very key to staying in the age appropriate bracket of global fashion. Stick to nude or minimal makeup, simple yet chic hairstyles and stay away from mile high stilettoes. Invest in chic boots, flirty flats/sandals with a few six- to four inch pointiest, pumps and stilettoes thrown in for special occasions.
